We tackled it as we did the work we subsequently produced for many of the talks at the conference itself (which will be posted shortly). We created a mindmap in the very broadest sense – one that worked on two levels, both as a big overall concept and, within that, as a container for smaller images, narratives and details. It was tough getting so much information into a relatively small amount of real estate, but ultimately we thought it did the job of conveying the lively, adversarial quality of Intelligence Squared events.

We were also asked to create a short animation based on the illustration for Wallpaper’s iPad edition, intended to serve as a kind of trailer for the content of the article. Wallpaper we great to work with, and it was a privilege to grace their elegant pages! Here’s the animation:

The idea was to help students gain a broader view, to encourage a curiosity beyond their art practice and inspire them to see their creative skills as a way of responding to the wider world.

The speakers were all great – and we experimented with using crayons for the first time as opposed to markers, which made an interesting change. A highlight for us was meeting Guardian cartoonist Martin Rowson and the license to be rude and disgusting that his talk gave us!

As the official Graphic Partner of the conference we’ve been putting together a crack team of visualisers ready to create illustrated summaries of each of the 36 talks.

That should certainly not prevent you from attending in person though. A veritable smörgåsbord of brilliant thinkers awaits those hungry for glimpses into the way we’ll be living our lives in the near and distant future, taking on subjects ranging from extreme longevity to the future of sex.

Even better news is that as a friend of Scriberia you can get a 20% discount on your ticket. So if you’re interested in the longer term future, but haven’t yet figured out what you’re doing next week, use the code SCRIBERIA when purchasing your ticket and activate this generous offer. Oh, and pass it on to anyone else interested in what they’ll be eating, wearing, playing, experiencing, feeling, enjoying and avoiding in the years ahead. http://www.iq2ifconference.com

We recently created this Amazon-themed live scribe at an event organised by Google. While perhaps not geographically accurate, the river’s twists and turns allowed us to create nice ‘pockets’ of content for each of the speakers, culminating with explorer Ed Stafford’s harrowing account of his 2 year trek along the entire length of the Amazon. Actually I’m not sure Ed was too keen on the way he was represented, but the other speakers were happy and we were particularly glad of the chance to draw some pink dolphins.

We recently completed two animations for Body and Soul, an amazing charity that offers support, hope and inspiration for children, young people and families affected by HIV. Briefed to create two films on HIV and how it is transmitted, the scripts, on first read, looked tricky to combine with our typically bright and breezy visuals. But colourful, accessible and engaging is what Body and Soul are all about, and actually, simplicity was the key to these. If you watch these and are left wondering about the fate of our central character don’t worry, his treatment starts in our third installment which we’ll working on soon.

Back in May, with the Middle East in revolt after decades of living under oppressive dictatorships, an audience of students gathered at the Royal Society for a debate organised by the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), the Open Society Foundation (OSF), IQ2, the British Council and the International Herald Tribune. The motion: ‘The Jasmine Revolution will wither in North Africa: it won’t meet the expectations of youth’.

That debate forms the basis of the second of our IQ2 Shorts animations, released last week on YouTube by @intelligencesquared. We’ve taken an edit of the full debate, focusing on the dialectic between Egyptian youth activist Nora Ayman and New York Times journalist Roger Cohen. Ayman suggests that the changes the revolutionary youth hope for will struggle to take hold while political, religious and class divides continue to fragment society. Cohen on the other hand, argues that though the road may be problematic, frustrating and bloody, those changes are inevitable in an age of global connectedness. We really enjoyed the challenge of shifting to a new cultural context and maintaining sensitivity to that, while continuing to work in a crisp, economical cartoon style. This one was illustrated by Chris, storyboarded by Chris and Dan, animated by Lionel, with portraits of the protagonists lovingly executed once again by Victor.
